Flag of Gibraltar (GIF)

The flag of Gibraltar is an elongated banner of arms based on the coat of arms of Gibraltar. The flag is comprised of two horizontal stripes, with white on top (double width) and red below. At the center of the flag stands a three-towered red castle, with a golden key hanging from the castle door. Notably, the Gibraltar flag does not bear the Union Jack and differs from the flags of other British overseas territories. While the castle on the flag does not correspond to any specific castle in Gibraltar, it is supposed to symbolize the fortress of Gibraltar. The depiction of the golden key is believed to represent the historical importance of the fortress, as Gibraltar has been historically recognized as the key to Spain by the Moors and Spanish, and later as the key to the Mediterranean by the British. The flag's design and symbolism encapsulate the territory's identity and historical importance as a strategic fortress.
