The flag of Hesse (German: Flagge Hessens) is characterized by its simple yet meaningful design, featuring two equal horizontal stripes in red and white. At the center of the state flag (below) lies a shield-shaped coat of arms, comprising a blue shield adorned with a red and white striped lion and topped with a crown of golden leaves. The red and white colors are derived from the Ludovingian coat of arms, which depicted a lion with a distinctive ninefold horizontal white and red division. This coat of arms was passed down to the House of Hesse upon its separation from the Duchy of Thuringia in 1247, underscoring the historical lineage and cultural significance associated with the region. The flag's design and symbolism thus encapsulate the rich historical heritage, noble lineage, and enduring legacy of Hesse.
