The flag of North Rhine-Westphalia (German: Flagge Nordrhein-Westfalens) is characterized by its design, consisting of three horizontal stripes in green, white, and red, which are a combination of the provincial colors of the Rhineland (green-white) and the Westphalian flag (white-red). In the center of the state flag (below), there is a coat of arms featuring a shield divided into three sections, each with symbolic significance. The green section on the left contains a wavy white stripe, representing the Rhine River, and symbolizing the Rhineland region. The red section on the right showcases the Saxon horse or Westphalian horse, signifying part of Westphalia within the state. The lower white section displays the Rose of Lippe, serving as the heraldic symbol of House Lippe. This rose represents the state of Lippe, which became part of North Rhine-Westphalia after giving up its independence as a free state following World War II, and officially joining the state on January 21, 1947. The flag's design and its incorporation of regional symbols reflect the rich history, diverse culture, and unity of North Rhine-Westphalia as a state within Germany.
