Flag of Prince Edward Island (GIF)

The flag of Prince Edward Island (French: Drapeau de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is composed of a golden lion on a red field in the upper portion and a white field adorned with three oak saplings and a large oak tree on a green island in the bottom portion. The flag is bordered on three edges, except the hoist side, by a fimbriation featuring alternating red and white rectangles. The golden lion, reminiscent of the one on the Royal Arms of England, signifies the English heritage of the early settlers to Prince Edward Island and pays homage to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the island's namesake. The large oak tree represents England, while the three oak saplings epitomize the three counties constituting the province, namely Kings County, Queens County, and Prince County. The green island symbolizes both Prince Edward Island and Great Britain, emphasizing their shared island identities. Collectively, these symbols align with the province's Latin motto, "Parva sub ingenti" ("The small under the protection of the great"), reflecting the historical British protectorate over the three counties of Prince Edward Island.
