Flag of Solothurn (GIF)

The flag of Solothurn (German: Flagge von Solothurn; French: Drapeau de Soleure) is a simple square field featuring two equal horizontal stripes of red and white. These colors are deeply rooted in the historical association of Solothurn with Saint-Ours. The canton and city of Solothurn have a profound historical connection to Saint-Ours, a revered member of the Theban Legion, with Solothurn Cathedral dedicated to this patron saint. Legend has it that Saint-Ours, who managed to escape the Massacre of the Theban Legion, was pursued by emissaries of Maximian Hercules to Solothurn. There, he endured torture and was ultimately beheaded at the very location where the cathedral now stands. This poignant narrative has led to the adoption of a flag featuring a white trefoiled cross on a red background, symbolizing the enduring link between Solothurn, its religious heritage, and the martyrdom of Saint-Ours.
